Jaguar – how did the brand come about? Explore the stories
The history of this British brand dates back to 1922, when Sir William Lyons founded the Swallow Sidecar Company. The current name of the company (Jaguar Cars Ltd.) has been in effect since 1945. Since then, the brand has been recognised as a luxury brand.
Six years later, after moving to Coventry, the model of the first car Austin Seven (convertible) is created. The official debut of the brand is considered to be the SS 1 model, which was created in 1931. Four years later, a convertible version of this model was presented. The SS model gained several body types thanks to a new chassis design. So there were limousines, coupes and also touring models. The exclusive Airline coupe model was named the Jaguar in 1936. It was also at this time that the legendary two-seater sports car called the Jaguar SS100 was developed, which in those days could reach a dizzying speed of up to 160 km/h. World War II saw a return to the production of sidecars and production for the British Air Force. After years of freedom, the brand owners abandoned the SS name for their models – which came to be associated with the German SS troops. For this reason Jaguar became the official brand name and the company name was changed to Jaguar Cars Ltd. After the war, models such as the Mark IV, the sporty Jaguar XK120 (with a 160 horsepower engine) were developed. This model was produced until 1954: Model XK140 (1954-57) and XK150 (1957-60). The Mark VII limousine, produced in 1954, proves to be a hit in the car market. At the end of 1955 Jaguar produced the Mark I mid-engined car, followed by the Mark II in 1959. In the 1960s Jaguar acquired the Daimler brand. From then on, Jaguar’s most luxurious models were signed with the Daimler name. 1968 saw the debut of the XJ6, the first of the luxury XJ series (followed by the XJ12 in 1972 and the XJ8 in 1998). With the introduction of the new generation of the XJ series, Jaguar phased out the use of the Daimler name.
The end of the 1980s marked another era for the company. In 1989, Ford took over the mare. After the American buyout of the group, further models were introduced (including the S-Type in 1999, the X-Type in 2001 and the XK in 2006), but failed to achieve spectacular success. In order to differentiate Jaguar, the brand became part of the Premier Automotive Group along with Volvo, Land Rover, Aston Martin and Lincoln.
